For a small daughter, the birthday she can name what she liked
The good early birthdays are the ones she can still describe a week later. The gift that lands is not the big one; it is the specific one she chose something inside.
Against what people spend
The whole range sits under the typical amount: even the top of it, $25, is less than the $55.65 average reported by Empower (2025). That is the right end for an ordinary birthday and the wrong end for a milestone.
This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a daughter — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.
What she remembers a week later
A parent asked afterward what her favourite part of the day was hears the answer plainly: sometimes the cake, sometimes a moment with a grandparent, sometimes a very specific thing about a small gift. Almost never the biggest present. The biggest present is a photograph of the day; the specific small thing is a piece of it.
This is not a trick. Children remember specificity, and a gift with a specific choice inside — the character on the pencil case chosen from three, the flavour of the small tin of paints, the friend she is inviting to the follow-up activity you gave her a voucher for — is a specific memory.
What ten to twenty-five buys at this age
Everything you actually need. A first proper stationery kit with the colours she picked at the shop, a small book about something she has been talking about, a voucher for an outing chosen from a shortlist of three you were willing to do. The mechanic is the shortlist: not “choose anything”, which overwhelms, but “choose one of these”, which fits.
What lands wrong at this age
Clothes she did not ask for. Even the beautiful jumper aunt sent lands as an adult concern intruding on a birthday. If clothes are the gift, let the choice be hers — a trip to pick one thing counts and the jumper doesn’t.
The other one is the thematic mega-gift built around an interest she had six months ago. Interests move at this age; a themed set for last year's obsession lands as evidence you were not paying attention.
When this is the wrong gift
Not the surprise trip announced on the day. These sound magical and land as pressure: she has to be delighted publicly. Announce it a week before, when she can look forward and choose one small thing about it herself.
Not clothes that are your taste rather than hers. Save those for a plain Tuesday and buy for the birthday what she was going to ask for.
Not a set of anything if she wanted one specific thing. Bulking up the specific request with adjacent items is a way of buying the shop rather than the object. She noticed the object; give her that.
