For your dad

Aimed at what he does, not at the fact that he is a father

There is an entire industry of gifts whose only idea is that the recipient is a dad. He has received several. None of them was about him.

Against what people spend

The typical amount falls inside this range: $55.65 on average, per Empower (2025), against a range of $25$60. Spend at the lower end and you are spending what most people spend.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a dad — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

Why this works when it works

Mugs, aprons and novelty tools themed on fatherhood are gifts to the role, not the person, and after the third one the joke has become a shelf. A gift aimed at something he actually does — the thing he spends Saturday on — says you noticed him rather than his job title.

The bar is lower than it looks. It does not need to be expensive or clever; it needs to be specific to an activity. That specificity is what the novelty gift cannot fake.

What makes it fail

Buying into a hobby he takes seriously. If he compares specifications and has opinions, you are guessing against an expert, and a near-miss becomes an object he now owns and did not want. In those cases buy the consumable, not the equipment: the good coffee rather than the grinder, the materials rather than the tool.

The question that finds it

What did he do last Saturday? Not what are his interests — the abstract question produces abstract answers, and the concrete one produces a gift.

When this is the wrong gift

Not if the activity has lapsed. Buying into something he has drifted away from lands as a comment on the drifting, particularly if health is the reason.

Not for a hobby with strong brand loyalties you are not sure of. Tools, fishing gear, anything with a tribe attached. Getting it approximately right is the failure mode here, not the safe outcome.

Not if he genuinely likes the novelty gifts. Some people do, and the whole argument above stops applying. You will know from whether the mugs are in use or in a cupboard.
