For your mom

Paying for the help she refuses to hire

There is usually a specific job she has decided is not worth paying someone to do — the windows, the garden, the thing on the roof — and which she is either doing herself or not doing at all.

Against what people spend

This starts above the typical amount. The cheapest version is $110 against a average of $55.65 (Empower, 2025), and the top of the range is $250. How far above you go is the decision here — enough of a gap can read as generous or as pressure to reciprocate, depending on the relationship.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a mom — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

Why this works when it works

This gift removes a real burden rather than adding a possession, and it works because of a particular asymmetry: she will not spend her own money on it, but she will accept it as a gift. The refusal is not about affordability, it is about a rule she has for herself, and a birthday is the one lever that gets around the rule without arguing with it.

Pick a job with an end. A one-off deep clean, a window cleaner, a gardener for a day, someone to take away the thing in the garage. A job that finishes is a gift; an ongoing arrangement is a subscription she now has to manage.

What makes it fail

Choosing the job for her. If you decide the house needs cleaning and book a cleaner, the gift contains a statement about her housekeeping, and that is what will be heard. It works when it is a job she has complained about, and it backfires when it is a job you noticed.

It also fails if she has to be there and does not want a stranger in the house. Booking the labour is the easy half; the intrusion is the part people forget to check.

Why this range and not more

A hundred and ten to two hundred and fifty dollars buys a day of skilled labour in most of the country, which is the natural unit here. It is well above the typical birthday amount, so this is a gift for a milestone or a shared present between siblings rather than an ordinary year.

When this is the wrong gift

Not if the job is one she takes pride in doing. Some people garden because they like gardening. Paying someone to finish it takes away the activity and calls it a favour.

Not for a mother who reads paid help as a comment on her age. This is the main failure mode as parents get older, and it is not subtle when it happens. If any recent conversation has touched on her managing on her own, this gift will be read in that light no matter how it is presented.

Not without checking she will be comfortable with the access. A tradesperson needs to get in, and for someone who lives alone that is a bigger ask than the money. Book it for a day you can be there yourself, or do not book it.
