The gap this year covers
Somewhere around eight or nine the gifts that worked stop working. He looks at the boxed toy the way he looked at the picture book two years earlier: politely. But the adult categories — knives, headphones with a serious brand on them, cameras — are not yet his either.
What lives in the middle is a small but real set of objects that are not toys and are not miniature adult things. Actual pocketknives sold for children, a compass that is a compass, a headtorch of his own, a magnifier that magnifies, a proper card deck. The theme is real, used, his.
Twenty-five to fifty dollars buys the good version of any of these. Below twenty-five they start to feel toy-like again — the plastic version of the wooden thing.
Why he can tell the difference
Because he can. He has seen the adult versions of these categories held by adults, and he notices the moment a toy is trying to look like one. The gift that lands does not try. It is a smaller model of the same category, made of the same materials, meant to be used.
The corollary: give the object with the assumption that he will use it. A pocketknife wrapped as if it were a toy is a toy. A pocketknife handed over with two rules and a demonstration is the beginning of a category he owns.
The version that misfires
Something more expensive than the thing he actually wanted, as a way of avoiding thinking about the thing he actually wanted. He mentioned trading cards. You bought a card storage folder. The folder is nicer than the cards; he has neither the cards he wanted nor the sense of being heard.
When this is the wrong gift
Not for a child of the same nominal age but younger in interests. Not every nine-year-old is ready for this shift, and gifting into the older category too early reads as a comment on him. Better a toy chosen well than a real thing chosen prematurely.
Not without the demonstration. A pocketknife or a headtorch given without the fifteen minutes of use with you attached is a hazard, or a novelty. Ten of those fifteen minutes are the gift.
Not more than one at once. Two real objects in one birthday is a haul, and the individual value of each dilutes. One is a category; two is a shop trip.
