Something that is not a joke, for once
Between adult brothers the joke gift is the default, and it is worth naming what it actually is: a way of not choosing. It is funny once and it says nothing.
Against what people spend
The typical amount falls inside this range: $55.65 on average, per Empower (2025), against a range of $25–$60. Spend at the lower end and you are spending what most people spend.
This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a brother — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.
Why breaking the pattern works
The joke gift is safe because it cannot be wrong. Nobody is disappointed by a novelty item, and nobody remembers it either. Years of that establish a norm where neither of you has to think, which is comfortable and slowly stops meaning anything.
A gift chosen seriously lands harder precisely because of that history. It does not need to be expensive or profound — it needs to be evidently not a joke, which after several years of jokes is itself the message.
What makes it fail
Announcing it. "I actually put some thought in this year" turns the gift into a comment on the previous ones. Just do it and say nothing.
Overshooting is the other failure. Going from novelty items to something large and emotional is a bigger jump than the relationship may want, and it can read as an implied criticism of how things have been.
How to find it when you are out of practice
Not by thinking about him in general. By recalling one specific thing he said in the last few months — a complaint, a plan, something he was looking into. Brothers exchange more of that than they realise and remember less of it.
When this is the wrong gift
Not if the joke gifts are a genuine tradition you both enjoy. Some people have run the same bit for twenty years and it is the point. You will know from whether he keeps them.
Not as a one-sided change on a milestone birthday. A thirtieth or fortieth already carries weight; adding a shift in how you two do birthdays on the same day is a lot at once.
Not if you cannot recall anything specific. Without a detail, a "serious" gift becomes a generic one, and a generic gift is worse than the joke — the joke at least admits what it is.
