For your brother

Something the two of you do, rather than something he keeps

Adult siblings run out of shared context surprisingly fast. You know who he was; you know much less about who he is, and objects are a poor way to close that.

Against what people spend

The typical amount falls inside this range: $55.65 on average, per Empower (2025), against a range of $45$110. Spend at the lower end and you are spending what most people spend.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a brother — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

Why this works when it works

The gap between brothers is usually not affection, it is occasions. Nobody schedules anything, so nothing happens, and the relationship runs on whatever the family calendar produces. A booked thing — a match, a walk, a meal, a day out — creates the occasion that neither of you was going to create.

It also solves the problem that you may not know his taste in objects any more. You do not need to: an afternoon requires no guess about what he likes on a shelf.

What makes it fail

Choosing something you want to do and calling it a gift for him. If it is your hobby, your team, your kind of restaurant, he will notice and be polite.

Not booking it is the other failure and the most common. "We should do something" has been said before and has a track record. A date and a confirmation are the gift; the intention is not.

Why this range

Forty-five to a hundred and ten dollars covers two tickets, a meal for two, or a day out locally. Above that you are into travel, where the number stops being about the two of you and starts being about distance.

When this is the wrong gift

Not if you live far apart and neither of you can travel. Then this is a promise with logistics attached, and promises with logistics attached are how these things quietly do not happen.

Not if his time is the scarce thing. A brother with young children and shift work may find a booked afternoon a cost rather than a gift. Ask before booking, even at the price of the surprise.

Not as a substitute for something to open, if there are children watching. At a family birthday with kids present, an adult receiving nothing to unwrap is conspicuous.
