For your sister

Something only you would know to give her

You have decades of material nobody else has. The book you both read as kids, the sweets from the shop near the old house, the reference no one else would get.

Against what people spend

The whole range sits under the typical amount: even the top of it, $40, is less than the $55.65 average reported by Empower (2025). That is the right end for an ordinary birthday and the wrong end for a milestone.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a sister — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

Your unfair advantage

A sibling has access to a store of shared detail no partner, friend or colleague can reach. A gift built from it cannot be replicated by anyone else at any price, which is a rare property in gift-giving.

It also lands almost independently of cost. Ten dollars aimed at a specific memory beats a hundred aimed at a category, because the value is recognition rather than expenditure.

Aim at a specific thing, not general nostalgia

The failure mode is generic childhood: a retro sweet box, a decade-themed something, anything that would work for a stranger born the same year. That reads as a theme rather than a memory.

The version that works is narrower and slightly odd — the specific edition, the specific flavour, the object from a story only the two of you tell. If a stranger would need it explained, you are on the right track.

Say what it is

Write the memory on the card. The object alone can misfire if she does not immediately land on the same reference, and one line removes that risk entirely.

When this is the wrong gift

Not if the memory is not fondly shared. Childhood is not equally good for everyone in a family, and a period you remember warmly may not be one she does. If you are not certain the reference lands happily, choose something else.

Not on its own for a milestone. At well under the typical spend it is right for an ordinary birthday and thin for a fortieth, where it works better alongside something else.

Not if it is really about your nostalgia. A gift that makes you feel something and invites her to join in is a gift to yourself.
