For your sister

The boring thing she keeps putting off buying

The proper suitcase, the office chair that does not hurt, the mattress topper. Unromantic, unphotogenic, and used more than anything else she gets this year.

Against what people spend

The typical amount falls inside this range: $55.65 on average, per Empower (2025), against a range of $45$150. Spend at the lower end and you are spending what most people spend.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a sister — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

Why the boring category is underserved

People postpone useful, unexciting purchases indefinitely. They are never urgent, they never feel like a treat, and there is always something more appealing to spend on — so the bad chair stays for another three years.

That is exactly the gap a gift fills well. You are not competing with what she would have bought; you are buying the thing she reliably would not.

Sibling licence

This category is easier between siblings than between partners. A practical gift from a spouse can read as a comment on the household; from a sister it reads as knowing her life. You have the standing to buy something unglamorous without it meaning anything else.

Buy at the level she would not

The whole value is in crossing the threshold she has been stuck below. A budget version of the thing she has been putting off puts her right back where she started, with the added awkwardness of now owning a mediocre one.

When this is the wrong gift

Not if she has a specific specification in mind. For anything she has actually researched — chairs and mattresses especially — the wrong one leaves her with a bulky item she cannot return and does not want.

Not for anything sized or fitted without measurements. Guessing on this kind of purchase produces an expensive return problem rather than a gift.

Not if she has said she is moving soon. Large practical objects are a burden mid-move, and the gift becomes one more thing to transport.
