For your wife

Repairing something she already loves

The jacket with the broken zip, the ring that needs resizing, the chair that has been in the spare room for two years. Cheap, unrepeatable, and impossible to buy by accident.

Against what people spend

The typical amount falls inside this range: $55.65 on average, per Empower (2025), against a range of $40$200. Spend at the lower end and you are spending what most people spend.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a wife — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

Why repair beats replacement here

Anything she has kept while broken is something she is attached to — otherwise it would have gone. The attachment is already established, which removes the guessing that makes gift-buying hard.

And repair returns the specific object rather than a similar one. For anything with history attached, a replacement is a downgrade wearing a higher price tag.

The economics are unusually good

A zip replacement, a resize, a reheel, a reupholstery job — most land well under what a new equivalent costs, and several land under the typical birthday spend while being worth considerably more to her than something new at the same price.

Do the whole errand

The reason it is still broken is almost never the money. It is that taking it somewhere means finding the place, getting it there, and going back. Doing that is most of the gift — handing her a voucher for a cobbler leaves the actual obstacle exactly where it was.

When this is the wrong gift

Not if you have to take it without telling her. Removing a loved object as a surprise risks a day of her thinking it is lost, and risks a repair she would have specified differently.

Not for anything she has been meaning to let go of. Some things are kept out of guilt rather than attachment, and restoring one hands the guilt back in better condition.

Not if the repair will visibly change it. A restoration that looks new can remove exactly the wear she liked. Ask what will change before agreeing to it.
