Taking one job off her plate for good
Pay for a year of something she currently does unpaid — the cleaning, the laundry, the thing she quietly absorbed. The most valuable gift on this page and the easiest to get wrong.
Against what people spend
This starts above the typical amount. The cheapest version is $120 against a average of $55.65 (Empower, 2025), and the top of the range is $400. How far above you go is the decision here — enough of a gap can read as generous or as pressure to reciprocate, depending on the relationship.
This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a wife — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.
Why this outperforms objects
In most households one person carries more of the invisible work than the other, and that person usually knows exactly which task they resent most. Removing it returns hours every month, which no object in this price range comes close to matching.
It is also the rare gift that keeps working. An object is received once; a booked service is received every time it happens.
The joint-money problem, stated plainly
Here is the part the gift guides skip. If your finances are shared, buying her something expensive is partly spending her own money on her, and you both know it. That is tolerable for an object, but a recurring service is a household budget decision wearing a bow — and presenting a budget decision as a present can land as a manoeuvre rather than a gift.
The way through is to be straightforward: agree the household can afford it, then let the gift be that you arranged it, chose it, and handle it. What you are giving is the removal of the task and the thinking, not a transfer of money.
Pick the task she named, not the one you would pick
Ask yourself which chore she has complained about more than once. If nothing comes to mind, that itself is information: you do not know, and guessing at this price is expensive.
When this is the wrong gift
Not if it can read as a comment on how she keeps the house. For some people a cleaner arriving is relief; for others it is a verdict. If you are not sure which, this is not the gift, and finding out by giving it is a poor way to find out.
Not from shared money without saying so. A recurring cost taken quietly from the joint account and presented as a present is the version of this that causes an argument. Agree the spend, then give the arranging.
Not as the whole gift. It is genuinely valuable and completely unwrappable. Something small and physical alongside keeps the birthday feeling like one.
