For your friend

Small and exact beats large and general — more here than anywhere

A thirty-dollar thing that could only have been chosen by you outperforms a two-hundred-dollar thing anyone could have bought, and between friends the gap is wider than in any other relationship.

Against what people spend

The whole range sits under the typical amount: even the top of it, $50, is less than the $55.65 average reported by Empower (2025). That is the right end for an ordinary birthday and the wrong end for a milestone.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a friend — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

Why the gap is wider here

A gift carries two things: what it is, and what it proves. Between friends the second part does most of the work, because nothing obliged you to give at all. An expensive but generic present proves only that you have money and remembered a date. A cheap and precise one proves you were paying attention when there was no reason to.

That is not a consolation for having a small budget. It is the actual mechanism, and it means the useful question is not “how much” but “what do I know about them that nobody selling gifts could know”.

Where the exact thing comes from

It is almost never something they asked for. It is something they mentioned once, in passing, months ago, and did not follow up on — a book they meant to read, a brand they used to buy and stopped finding, a spice they ran out of and complained about, the specific pen they liked at your desk.

If nothing comes to mind, that is information rather than a dead end: it means you have not been listening lately, and the honest fix is to ask them something and remember the answer before next year.

What it is worth budgeting

Twenty-five to fifty dollars covers nearly everything in this category, because the category is defined by specificity rather than price. Spending more usually means you have drifted back to buying an impressive object.

When this is the wrong gift

Not for a friendship where you have both been buying each other substantial gifts for years. Changing the register without saying anything reads as a downgrade, not as a considered choice. If you want to change it, change it out loud.

Not when the small thing is a joke. Precision and humour are different aims. A joke gift proves you remember one story about them, which is a weaker claim than it appears.

Not if you are inventing the detail. A gift built on a half-remembered preference lands worse than a generic one, because it visibly tries to be personal and misses.
