Being there is the gift, and after thirty it is the rare one
With family, attendance is assumed. With friends it is chosen, and by your thirties it is the thing that quietly stops happening — which is exactly what makes it worth more than an object.
Against what people spend
The whole range sits under the typical amount: even the top of it, $25, is less than the $55.65 average reported by Empower (2025). That is the right end for an ordinary birthday and the wrong end for a milestone.
This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a friend — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.
Why this is not a way of spending nothing
It reads like an excuse for turning up empty-handed, so the distinction matters. Nobody counts a relative who comes to a birthday: they were always going to. A friend who travels across a city on a weeknight has spent something that cannot be bought back, and both of you know it.
The cost is real, it is just not in the gift. An evening, a train, a babysitter, the work you move to make it possible. That is the spend, and it lands where money does not.
Make it visible, or it does not count
Showing up silently is invisible. Say the thing out loud in the moment — that you moved something to be there, that you would not have missed it. Not as a claim on credit, but because the effort is the present and an unnamed present is not received.
Bring something small anyway. Not as the gift, as a marker that you did not treat the evening as informal.
The version that fails
Arriving late, leaving early, spending the evening on your phone. Attendance performed rather than given is worse than absence, because it says the occasion ranked below whatever you kept checking.
When this is the wrong gift
Not if you have been absent all year. Turning up once, on the day, after twelve months of nothing reads as an attempt to settle an account. Fix the year first; the birthday is not where that gets done.
Not for a friend who explicitly asked for no fuss and no visitors. Some people mean it. Showing up regardless makes the day about your gesture rather than their preference.
Not as a substitute when everyone else is bringing something. In a group where gifts are the norm, arriving with only your presence singles you out and puts the host in the position of covering for you.
