For your friend

When the group splits one gift, decide who is owed what first

A shared present buys something none of you could buy alone. It also produces the two arguments that outlive the birthday — who fronted the money, and who never sent it back.

Against what people spend

This starts above the typical amount. The cheapest version is $100 against a average of $55.65 (Empower, 2025), and the top of the range is $250. How far above you go is the decision here — enough of a gap can read as generous or as pressure to reciprocate, depending on the relationship.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a friend — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

What splitting is for

Six people at forty dollars each reach a gift that is genuinely out of individual reach, and that is the only good reason to do it. Splitting to reduce what each person spends is a different thing and usually produces a worse present than six separate small ones.

Settle the mechanics before you buy

One person pays and the rest transfer. That is unavoidable, and it is where it goes wrong: the person who fronted two hundred dollars ends up chasing three people for six weeks and cannot chase harder without looking petty.

Two rules fix nearly all of it. Name the amount per person before anything is bought, not after — an amount announced afterwards is a bill, not an agreement. And collect before the purchase where you can, because the willingness to pay drops sharply once the gift has already been handed over.

Say who it is from, plainly

One card, everyone named, no ranking by contribution. If somebody could not put in the full share, that stays between you and them. A gift that quietly encodes who paid more is a worse gift than anything you could have bought separately.

When this is the wrong gift

Not if one person in the group cannot afford the share. They will say yes and then go quiet, and the situation ends with someone excluded from a group gift over money. A lower share for everyone, or separate presents, costs the friendship less.

Not when the group is not actually a group. If half of them know each other only through the birthday person, coordination falls entirely on one organiser and the gift arrives with a card of names that means nothing to the recipient.

Not for something requiring their taste. Committees converge on the safe middle. Furniture, clothing and anything decorative come out of a group decision blander than any one of you would have chosen alone.
