For your son-in-law

For a son-in-law, the gift is welcome, not a test

The gift here is not for him alone — it is a small message about how you two will get on. The trap is making him earn it by naming an interest specific enough for you to buy for.

Against what people spend

The typical amount falls inside this range: $55.65 on average, per Empower (2025), against a range of $50$100. Spend at the lower end and you are spending what most people spend.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a son-in-law — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

What the gift is actually about

In the first years of a relationship with a son-in-law, the birthday gift carries an unusually heavy signal. He notices what you chose. He notices what it cost. He notices whether you asked his partner what he liked, or whether you tried to know him yourself.

The signal you probably want to send is: welcome, we will pay attention to who you are, and we will not require you to perform yourself for us. That target rules out most of the obvious moves.

What actually lands

Something you noticed on your own, chosen without help from your daughter. Not something big. Something specific: the sauce he mentioned liking, the book he referenced once, a bottle of the drink he ordered at your table. Fifty to a hundred dollars covers all of these comfortably, and the value has nothing to do with the price.

You are saying: I noticed. That, more than the object, is what marks the transition from being tolerated by his in-laws to being known by them.

Where it goes wrong

A quiz phrased as a gift. “What should I get you?” asked with tension in it produces the answer “oh you don't need to”, which is worse than a smaller gift chosen badly. He is not going to name his taste to be tested against it.

The other failure is inheritance-branded generic: a wallet or a watch that would suit any adult male, delivered as if the category was the point. He can tell you did not choose it.

When this is the wrong gift

Not on the very first birthday you are aware of, if you barely know him. A modest, thoughtful gift is right here. Fifty to a hundred dollars for someone you met twice reads as premature; twenty-five dollars on something small and correct lands better.

Not when the relationship is under visible strain. A birthday gift will not repair anything, and one that lands wrong will make the next visit worse.

Not as compensation for a disagreement about your daughter. He will see it, and he will read the gift as your attempt to purchase her side of the disagreement. Fix the disagreement first, or let the birthday pass quietly.
