For your son-in-law

When he is also the father of your grandchild

The birthday after his first child is born changes what the gift can mean. He is now doing something in your presence that you have opinions about — fathering — and the safest gift is the one that acknowledges that without evaluating it.

Against what people spend

The whole range sits under the typical amount: even the top of it, $50, is less than the $55.65 average reported by Empower (2025). That is the right end for an ordinary birthday and the wrong end for a milestone.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a son-in-law — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

What actually shifted

Before the baby, a birthday gift to a son-in-law was a signal about how you two get on. After the baby, the same gift also lands as commentary on how he is fathering: what you notice, what you value, what you think he should have.

That extra layer is unavoidable. What is optional is whether the object leans into it. A gift that has an implicit lesson in it — a book about calm parenting, a beautiful sling you would have bought yourself, an heirloom-style toy you want the baby to have — gets received as an opinion. He may agree with the opinion and still resent that it arrived on his birthday.

What is genuinely his

Something for him as a person, unrelated to the child. The hobby he had before the baby that he is now doing less: the running kit, the book series he stopped, the guitar strings. Twenty-five to fifty dollars in these categories says clearly: I still see you, not just the role.

If nothing in that direction is obvious, ask his partner — not for a wishlist, but for a thing he mentioned missing in the last six months. That answer usually exists.

The two moves that fail

The joint gift for him and the baby. It saves you a decision, and it makes his birthday a story about the baby. Nothing about that is his.

The elaborate parenting gadget. Whatever it is, he has been sent three articles about it by his mother-in-law already and has views. The birthday is not the day to add a fourth.

When this is the wrong gift

Not for a couple who has actively rejected the extended family’s help. A gift for him bypassing the baby, from people the baby is being kept from, reads as manoeuvre. Give the relationship time first.

Not if you do not know what he was doing before the child. Then this page does not apply; go back to the plain “noticed one thing” category from his other birthdays.

Not with the assumption new-father priorities are yours to nominate. He is deciding what he keeps and what he sets down. Your job is not to help him decide; your job on his birthday is to see him.
