For your son-in-law

Years in, he is one of yours

Somewhere between the fifth and the tenth year the son-in-law tension dissolves and you can buy the same size gift you would buy a son. The trick is doing so without turning it into a speech.

Against what people spend

This starts above the typical amount. The cheapest version is $100 against a average of $55.65 (Empower, 2025), and the top of the range is $250. How far above you go is the decision here — enough of a gap can read as generous or as pressure to reciprocate, depending on the relationship.

This is the national figure for an adult's birthday gift, not a breakdown for a son-in-law — no published survey we could find breaks spending down by relationship, and the per-relationship numbers you will see elsewhere carry no source.

What has changed

The gift no longer carries the signalling load it did in the early years. He has been at every family occasion for close to a decade; the question of belonging is settled. What that unlocks is not permission to be more sentimental — it is permission to be more specific and more expensive without either being read as a claim.

A hundred to two hundred and fifty dollars now lands as normal. Under a hundred still lands too. Over two hundred and fifty starts to be an event again, and that returns you to the early-years problem.

What lands well in this bracket

Something serious in a category he actually pursues. The good tool for the hobby he has stayed with. The proper version of the equipment he has been improvising. The book series he is halfway through, in the format he prefers.

This is also the bracket where a shared experience works cleanly: a booked activity for the two of you — a match, a hike, a workshop — without your daughter as chaperone. The birthday is the good excuse for something you would not otherwise organise alone.

What quietly reintroduces the old dynamic

The gift-with-speech. “We wanted to say how much you’ve meant to this family” attached to an object turns a good present into an anniversary card. Send that separately, or say it verbally with a plain gift; combining the two puts weight on the object it will not carry.

The other one is comparison: buying him the same thing his brother-in-law got. Even after ten years the comparison lands.

When this is the wrong gift

Not for someone you never quite warmed to over the years. If the relationship is polite but distant, this bracket reads as forced closeness. Stay in the fifty-to-hundred range with something small and correct.

Not with an inscription. Ten years of gifts have not been inscribed. Starting now marks the object as trying to freeze the relationship into something ceremonial.

Not when the year has been rough between you and your daughter. A larger gift to him at that moment reads as a message to her routed through him, and he will notice.
